Winifred M. “Winnie” Williams, 95, of Greenfield Drive, Carlisle passed Friday, February 15, 2013 at Thornwald Home, Carlisle with her sister Shirley Lucas at her side.
Born October 29, 1917 in Carlisle she was a daughter of the late Harry R. and Ray H. Clough Pittenger.
A graduate of Carlisle High School class of 1935 and a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1927. Winnie was known for her activities with the Democratic Party in PA. Retired from the Auditor General’s Dept. of the Commonwealth of PA, she was an active member of the PA Federation of Democratic Women since 1961, holding several offices. Winnie went on to serve as Jury Commissioner for Cumberland County for several years before retiring. In 1989 she received the prestigious Franklin Delano Roosevelt Award for the Cumberland County Democratic Committee and in 1990 received a citation from the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of PA.
Winnie was married to Richard E. Williams on March 24, 1939 for 66 years before his death on April 10, 2005. She is preceded by her sisters, Marian Miller, Ethel Mae Brubaker, Audrey J. Mentzer and Ruby Lowry, also, brothers, Harry R. Jr., Wilbur, Marlin and William Pittenger. Surviving are her sister, Shirley Lucas, Carlisle, three brothers, John Pittenger, Carlisle, Richard W. Pittenger, Carlisle and Edward Pittenger, Centerville.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday February 20, 2013 in the Grace United Methodist Church, 45 S. West St., Carlisle with Pastor Susan Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. There will be a viewing from 9:00 am until the time of the services in the church.
