Winifred "Lou" Louise Gamble Powless, 84, of Carlisle, died Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
Born November 26, 1930 in Greenville, PA, she was a daughter of the late Dr. John Taylor Gamble and Lydia Katharine Roth Rissell Gamble and the widow of John W. Powless.
She studied at Grove City College for two years and one year at Thiel College where her father was professor of Biology and her grandparents were loyal benefactors. Winifred retired in 1991 as secretary of Carlisle High School Vocational Department. She was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle and also the St. Paul Quilting Group. Winifred belonged to a bridge club and was also an avid mahjong player. She volunteered for many years with Project SHARE. She loved to travel, especially to the family cabin in Mifflin County and the sea shore. She loved music, reading, movies, sewing, genealogy, theater, and was a regular listener of the Prairie Home Companion Show.
Surviving are one son, Todd F. Powless (wife, Amy) of Carlisle; two daughters, Katharine J. Crawford of Carlisle and Amy P. Metzger (husband, Gregory) of Cranberry Township; five grandchildren: Michael Crawford, Jr., Melana Powless, Kevin Powless, Elliot Metzger, and Bennett Metzger; two great-grandchildren, Ganae Nickerson-Crawford and Ashton Apgar; two nieces, Camille Austin of Florida and Nancy Santangelo, of Greenville, PA; and two great-nieces, Melissa Schmitt and Courtney Austin. She was preceded in death by sister, Kathryn Taylor Gamble Sowers and grandson, Todd William Powless.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle with Rev. Carol Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.
