William (Bill) C. Smith of Carlisle, passed away at home on Wednesday November 20, 2024, surrounded by his family from natural causes. He was born 11 May 1933 in Plainfield, NJ, the son of W. Carl Smith and Edna M. (Jorgensen) Smith, both deceased.
He was united in marriage with Katherine L. Loest on 22 December 1956, in Calgary, Alberta Canada with whom he shared a union of 68 years with.
Following schooling in Nutley, NJ, he attended and received his BS degree in animal science, from Iowa State University. This was followed by a MS degree in dairy science from Rutgers University. Later, other academic challenges were provided by the University of Washington, Cornell University and Dickinson College. Subsequent employers included Alfred Tech College, Norwich Pharmacal Company, Zeigler Brothers and the Department of Defense.
As part of his tenure at Iowa State, Mr. Smith’s graduation, included the receipt of gold bars indication 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army with a 3-year obligation. This obligation was realized, mostly in Germany, with a 155mm howitzer battalion. Two years were experienced in another 155 howitzer unit, NY National Guard. The 98th division (reserves) provided a plethora of challenges and opportunities for advancement, which commenced as company commander and evolved to being the commandant of the brigades drill sergeant school for three years; subsequently, brigade adjutant. Moving to Pennsylvania, brought completion of 28 years of services, with the 2090th USAR School, mostly as a C&GS instructor, subsequently S-3, retiring as an LTC.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine L. Smith; their three children, Carl F. Smith, Michelle A. Smith and, David A. Smith; two grandchildren, Richard C. Smith, Jeffrey C. Smith; two great grandchildren, Phillip W. Smith, Margot J. Smith.
Interests after the immediate family, have been numerous and varied. Horticultural endeavors have been pursued. Many miles have been accrued with visits to all 50 US States and 65 foreign countries.
Three years in high school led to a passion for rowing(crew). Subsequent years provided further development via participation with several US and German rowing clubs and 11 rowing tours spread over 4 continents. Bill was the primary founder of the Susquehanna Rowing Association (1985) in the Harrisburg-York, PA area. Concurrent with his own rowing, Bill was the sole proprietor of American Sculling, which was involved with importing and selling rowing shells, oars and other sundries, mostly from Europe, throughout the US, Canada and Turkey for approximately.
