William M. Stoops, Jr. of Carlisle died peacefully on October 8, 2019, with his wife of more than 61 years holding his hand and recalling happy memories of their life together. He would have turned 87 in just three weeks.
In addition to his wife Alberta Kelly Stoops, his family includes stepdaughter Georgene Bivens Thompson; grandsons Erik Thompson (wife Sylvia) and Bridger Thompson (wife Kelly); great-grandchildren Mary Jane, Briar, William, and Samuel Thompson; son-in-law David R. Thompson, all from the Carlisle area, as well as a niece and two nephews.
Bill was born in Carlisle on November 3, 1932, the son of William M. Stoops, Sr. and Esther Myers Stoops. His sisters Anna Cullings and Jobyna Maclay preceded him in death.
Bill was a graduate of Carlisle High School Class of 1950, and had retired as a mechanical engineer for the Eshenaur & Sons Fuel Company, Harrisburg, PA. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the Carlisle Elks Lodge #578 B.P.O.E., member of the Carlisle Fraternal Eagles Lodge Aerie #1299, Carlisle VFW Post #477 and the New Cumberland American Legion Post #143.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Westminster Cemetery officiated by Elder Deborah Madden of First Presbyterian Church, 2-A N. Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts in his name to his church or an animal rescue of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Rd., Carlisle, PA 17013.
