William E. Demuth, Jr., Md

William E. DeMuth, Jr., MD, age 94, of Carlisle, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Cumberland Crossings, Carlisle.
He was born on April 3, 1921 in Altoona, PA to the late William E. DeMuth, Sr. and Mathilda Herzberg DeMuth and was the widower of his wife of 63 years, Emma B. "Teddy" Baer DeMuth.
Dr. DeMuth was Chief of Surgery at Carlisle Hospital from 1953 to 1971. Then he became Professor of Surgery at the newly founded Penn State M. S. Hershey Medical Center where he worked for 12 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus. He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College, Class of 1943 with a degree in Biology and was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Class of 1946. He then completed his surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. William was drafted into the US Army in 1943 while in college and served for 11 years. He also served as Chief of Surgical Services while in the Army at the 376th Station Hospital in Japan. He had a long and distinguished career and authored over 100 medical publications. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons meant the most to him. His storytelling was legendary. Everyone loved to listen to his stories everywhere he went. Bill was an avid reader and believed in lifelong learning.
He is survived by his three sons, Dr. William W. DeMuth and wife Dr. Cynthia T. DeMuth of Hershey, Donald L. (and wife Dr. Nancy M.) DeMuth of Carlisle and Jack B. DeMuth of Concord, MA; a brother, Q. Donald (and wife Barbara) DeMuth of Cottonwood, AZ; seven grandchildren, Drew (and wife Melissa) DeMuth, Lance DeMuth, Anne (and husband Shawn) Hirsch, William W. DeMuth, Jr., Peter DeMuth, Diana DeMuth and Lorin DeMuth; and one great-grandson, Hunter Hirsch. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Blair DeMuth.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Jeffrey L. Gibelius and Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. All are invited to join the family for a luncheon in the church fellowship hall following the services.
