Vivian Martãƒâ­Nez-Vidal

Vivian (Day) Martínez-Vidal died at the age of 86 in Carlisle, on Jan. 1, 2012. Vivian passed away from complications related to circulatory problems.

She was born in Danby, N.Y. to Georgia Elouise (Grant) and Floyd Henry Day on Jan. 27, 1925 and grew up in Dryden, N.Y. After receiving her BA from Eastern Baptist College (now Eastern University), Vivian earned a Masters in Library Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia. She became the head of circulation at the Dickinson College library and then, for six years, was the head librarian at the Bosler Free Library in Carlisle. At Bosler, one of her proudest accomplishments was to have started prison library services and nursing home library services. After her marriage to Dr. Enrique J. Martínez-Vidal ended in divorce, she moved to the Philadelphia area and became the head librarian at the William Jeanes Memorial Library in Lafayette Hill. Her final place of employment was Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken, N.J. Vivian retired to Cayce, S.C. but returned to Carlisle in 2000.

She loved to read, bake and travel. Her favorite trips were to England, Scotland and Wales, although she visited Mexico, Canada, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland as well as being a missionary in Venezuela as a young woman. She is survived by her children: Elena Martínez-Vidal and her husband Joseph Morales of Columbia, S.C., Enrique E. Martínez-Vidal and his wife Beatrice Kingsbury of Brookville, Md., and Adriana Vidal of Los Angeles, Calif.; her brother-in-law Alton A. (Sally) Glazier; her sister-in-law Eleanor VanMarter Day; nieces and nephews: Douglas (Karen) Glazier, Eric (Mary Beth) Glazier, Bruce (Terri) Glazier, Karen (William) Cleveland, and Diane Wilson and many great-nieces and nephews. Vivian was predeceased by her parents, her brother Lawrence (Larry) R. Day, and her sister Charlotte Jean (Day) Glazier.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, on Saturday, March 31, 2012. In lieu of flowers, please send any memorial donations to support the Bosler Library Building Fund at 158 W. High St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
