Virginia “Ginny” (Snyder) Cameron, 99, of Newville, formerly a longtime resident of Westport, CT, passed away October 2, 2019 at Green Ridge Village.
She was born on August 30, 1920 in East Orange, NJ to the late George O. and Frances Virginia (Rooney) Snyder.
Ginny was a 1943 graduate of Hofstra University, where she was a business major, a member of Wreath and Foil sorority, and played lacrosse and field hockey. After graduation she supported the war effort working at Airborne Instruments Laboratory, and while there met her future husband, Donald Brown Cameron (M.I.T. ’41), who worked for Columbia University Division of War Research on the Magnetic Anomaly Detector, used to locate enemy submarines, from dirigibles flying over the Atlantic. They married in 1945. A lady of many talents, Ginny could sew couture quality clothing, knit Argyle socks in the darkness of a movie theater, and design and make contemporary silver jewelry. She was a 60+ year member of P.E.O., a Philanthropic Educational Organization for women. Ginny was a very determined golfer, playing into her 90’s, primarily at the Patterson Club in Fairfield, CT and the Island Country Club in Marco Island, FL.
Ginny is survived by her children, Col. Kenneth D. Cameron, USMC, (Ret) and wife Michele F., Pensacola, FL, Douglas G. Cameron and wife Linda S., Bethlehem, PA and Judith C. married to Col. Joseph R. Nunez, USA, (Ret) Carlisle, PA; grandchildren Robert Cameron (Rosalie), Edward Cameron (Samantha), Taylor Cameron (Kaitlin), Hadley Kreitz (David), Betsy Nunez, Emily Cavness (Cully), and Thomas Nunez; and great-grandchildren Una Kreitz, Sophia Cameron, Saer Kreitz, and Quinn Cameron. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Donald Brown Cameron, a brother Warren Snyder and a sister Dorothea Clarke.
Funeral services will be held privately at the behest of the family.
