Velma B. Gebhard, 98, of Carlisle, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Thornwald Home.
She was born in Carlisle, Pa., on September 18, 1916 and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Edna Gleim Baughman and was the widow of James B. Gebhard to whom she was married for 70 years and who died on May 26, 2011.
She lived in Carlisle all of her life. She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1935 and went to Shippensburg College (now Shippensburg University) and completed her teaching certificate in 1937. She completed her Bachelor's degree in education in 1950. She worked as a teacher for 35 years starting in a one room school house in North Middleton and finished at the Hamilton Elementary school in 1976 where she taught second grade. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi and Eastern Star for many years.
She is survived by her children; son, Terry J. (and wife Joan E.) Gebhard of Exton, PA, daughter, Velma G. (and husband Richard J.) Conway of North Caldwell, NJ; a sister, Christine Hemperly of Carlisle; three grandchildren, Justin T. Gebhard, Megan C. Lapp and Brendan G. Conway; two great-children, Riley and Harper Lapp; and close friends, Hazel and Ron Kunkleman of Newville. She was preceded in death by a brother, LeGrand Baughman and a sister, Clover Baughman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle with Rev. James E. VanZandt officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Churchtown. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services.
