Thelma C. "Pinkie" Saphore, age 88, of Carlisle, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
She was born on May 6, 1927 in Mifflin Township to the late Simon S. and Olive Hurley Chestnut and was the widow of the late Frank W. Saphore.
Pinkie worked at C.H. Masland & Sons for a number of years and then retired from the Amalgamated Garment & Textile Workers Union as a secretary. She was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church and the former Carlisle First United Methodist Church since 1949.She served on the Church Council and was very active in her Sunday school class. She was a member of AARP, where she served as President and a member of SWAP (Seniors Without A Partner). Pinkie was a champion bowler and loved baking, especially when it came to giving baked goods away. Her mission in life was to visit and care for others.
She is survived by her son, Garry (and wife Sharon) Saphore of Carlisle; grandchild, Heather (and husband Tim) Overholtzer of Stafford, VA; great-grandchildren, Mairwen and Hannah Overholtzer; brother, Jay (and wife Donna) Chestnut of Carlisle; nieces and nephews, Susan Spengler of Jeffersonville, PA, Michelle Chestnut of Lakeland, FL and William Chestnut of Rockville, MD; two great-nieces, Jacquelyn and Alyssa Spengler; and two great-nephews, Andrew and Lucas Chestnut. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Valeria Chronister, Charles Chestnut, Amy McClintock and Glenn Chestnut.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West St., Carlisle with the Rev. James E. VanZandt and the Rev. Lewis Burgett officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery. There will be a viewing at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2015 and at the church from 1:00 until the time of the services on Friday.
