Steven C. Thorne, 54, of Boiling Springs, passed away, while surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, May 18, 2020 at his residence.
He was born on February 4, 1966 in Albany, MO to William and Janice (Fankhauser) Thorne who currently reside in Iowa City, IA.
Steven attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in Oceanography. While at the Naval Academy, Steven excelled academically, athletically and professionally. Arriving from Iowa City, Iowa in the Summer of 1984, Steven, T-Dog, Thorne-Dog, or Thorney, spent his Plebe year at the Naval Academy with the 19th Company. Following Plebe year, Steven transitioned to 32nd Company, where, in the Summer of 1986, he spent time as a Submariner in New London, Connecticut, a Marine in Quantico, Virginia, and a Pilot in Pensacola, Florida. In the summer of 1987, Steven played the role of Surface Warfare onboard the frigate USS Whipple (DE-1062/FF-1062) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. As a senior, or “Firstie,’ Steven rose to a position of leadership at the Naval Academy and was selected as the 32nd Company Commander and subsequently led the company to Commissioning in May, 1988.
Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Steven C. Thorne was a twenty-year veteran of the United States Navy. As a supply logistics officer, his various assignments included Space Field Activity, CINCPAC Fleet Staff, Fifth Fleet Strike Force during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and sea duty with the destroyer USS Tattnall (DDG-19), the cruiser USS Dale (DLG-19/CG-19), the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD-4), and the USS Frederick (LST-1184), a tank landing ship. He received the following decorations and awards: Defense Meritorious Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; Navy “E” Ribbon. He obtained graduate degrees from both Chaminade University in Honolulu, HI and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
Most recently, Steven worked for the Department of the Navy as a Logistics Manager for the U.S. Navy Stored Value Card Program. He provided support to 132 Navy ships and over 250,000 Sailors and Marines.
Steven was adored by his family, and his greatest joy was loving his family in return. He was a coach for the South Middleton Soccer Association and served as president of the Boiling Springs High School Volleyball Booster Club. He was a strong supporter of the Boiling Springs Bubbler community. Steven was fearless and courageous, and inspired all he met by his charisma and charm. Steven shared his life with others, living as a selfless man.
In addition to his parents, Steven is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Erin M. Thorne of Boiling Springs, PA; four children, Aubrie, Kaden, Connor and Trent; one sister, Susan Rasmussen of Jefferson, IA; one brother, Brian (wife, Kathy) Thorne of Valencia, CA; two sisters-in-law, Katie (husband, Aaron) Martin of Mechanicsburg, PA and Amy (husband, Dave) Weimer of Boiling Springs, PA; mother-in-law Elizabeth Rahilly of Boiling Springs, PA; father-in-law Dwight Wimer of Carlisle, PA, and twelve nieces and nephews: Sarah, Chris, and Alex Rasmussen, Andy and Tyler Thorne, Kyle, Rhia, Iain and Teagan Martin, and Jonah, Eli and Olivia Weimer. He was preceded in death by one beloved niece, Emily Thorne.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013.
