Shirley M. Wood, 76 of Carlisle, died Tuesday March 1, 2011 in Harrisburg Hospital.
Born May 13, 1934 in Mt. Union, she was the daughter of the late Art and Violet (Black) Smith.
Shirley graduated valedictorian of Mt. Union Area High School, class of 1952. For 41 years she was a property casualty agent working for Malcolm M. Simons and Sons, Darr-Thumma Ins. and finally with The Strickler Agency. Shirley was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle and was a certified Stevens Minister. Earlier in her life, she was also a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher. She was a member of the Christian Womens’ Club. Shirley was a member and Past Matron of Old Bellaire Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was Past Mother Advisor of Carlisle Assembly, Rainbow for Girls and Past District Deputy for Rainbow for Girls, District 34.
Shirley’s passion in life was investing in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and loved to shop with her daughters. She and her husband Dick enjoyed vacationing in Florida and traveling with family. She was active in a number of community organizations where she could serve other people.
Surviving is her husband of 58 years Richard S. Wood, Carlisle, a son, Bob Wood and his wife Cheryl, York, two daughters, Cheryl Wood Thompson and husband Tim, Wrightsville, Vonda Moon and her husband Carl, York, a brother, Ken Smith and his wife Pat, Elmira, N.Y., three sisters, Minerva Shindler and her husband Bob, Mechanicsburg, Charlotte A. Renninger and her husband Ken, Newton Hamilton, PA, and Nancy Pollack and her husband Don, Newark, DE, and six special grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 12, 2011 in the Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle with the Rev. Jeffrey W. Gibelius and Rev. Jennifer McKenna officiating.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Elaine Fry Memorial Grant Fund of Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Dr., Carlisle PA 17013 and/or the Children’s Dyslexic Center, 2701 N. Third St., Harrisburg PA 17110. These funds are purposed on children, which was an integral part of Shirley’s life.
