George M. Morton, Jr., 82, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully at his home on October 2, 2011. He was born on January 20, 1929, in Ickesburg. He was the son of the late George M. and Kathryn J. (Weibley) Morton.
He spent more than 20 years with the U.S. Army having served in Italy, Germany, Alaska, California, Maryland, Korea and Fort Indiantown Gap. After his Army career, he retired after eleven years with the Cumberland County Prison as a Correctional Officer. He enjoyed traveling, going to Baltimore to watch the Orioles play, listening to big band and country music, playing with his computer, going to block shoots, and spending time with his grandchildren and family.
He was past president and life member of the Pennsylvania State Fire Police Association, past president and treasurer of the Cumberland County Fire Police Association, former member of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, former associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a lifetime member of the Newville VFW Post 6070.
He is survived by his wife, Gerlinde (“Linnâ€Â) B. Morton, two daughters, Linda S. Witmer and her husband Larry of Harrisburg and Lisa M. Bloser and her husband Eric of Carlisle, two sons, Clifford L. Morton and his wife Michele of Carlisle and Michael W. Morton of Carlisle, four grandchildren, Sarah Morton, Laura Morton, Logan Bloser and Rylee Bloser, one sister, Harriet E. White, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers, Weldon S. Morton and John S. Morton.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street. Graveside service and burial will be private at the request of the family. Burial will be in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by Cumberland County Honor Guard.
