Sandra Lee Hukill

Sandra Lee Hukill, 85, passed away on February 7, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. Born June 11, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Galbraith) and William H Schlottman. Her father’s position with Fisher Body Division of General Motors Corporation took the family to Dearborn and Lansing, Michigan, Baltimore, Maryland and eventually to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Sandy graduated from Baldwin-Whitehall high school. After earning her B.A. degree from Mount Union College in Alliance Ohio in 1961, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Sandy accepted an appointment with the PA Department of Labor & Industry, with the exception of a ten-year break in service to be a stay-at-home mom, she worked continuously with the Department’s Employment Service until her retirement in 2001. Many will remember her as the head of Unemployment Compensation for Cumberland County.

The widow of David DeHass Hukill, to whom she was married for 60 years, she is survived by her daughter Emily Colatriano, (husband David) of Wayne, Pennsylvania, a son, Nathan DeHass Hukill (wife Monica) of Dorado, Puerto Rico; granddaughter Olivia Colatriano, and grandsons Milo DeHass Hukill and Lucas DeHass Hukill, step-granddaughter, Allison Colatriano of NYC, and a sister, Dorothy Griffith (husband Terry) of Covington Georgia, five nieces, three nephews and a number of grand nieces and nephews. A brother, James Schlottman, (wife Margaret) proceeded her in death in 2021.

Active in civic and community affairs since locating in the South Central PA area in 1963, Sandy was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, a founding member and first president of Carlisle Community Nursery School a co-op involving parent involvement which is still in existence; she was a member, past president of the Carlisle Junior Civic Club; a member and past officer of the Harrisburg chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega Alumnae Club a member and past treasurer of PEO; an active member of the Breast Cancer Coalition where she certified members for continuing education and a volunteer at Cumberland County Historic Society. Sandy was also a cancer survivor, following her successful fight against breast cancer in 1995 and remained cancer free for the rest of her years.

An avid bridge enthusiast, she played regularly with five groups and substituted additionally with two more. Nothing got in her way of playing bridge.

Sandy and her late husband lived most of their adult lives at their farm in Middlesex Township where they lovingly restored their two hundred years old home, Stonedale Cottage. 

Hoffman Funeral Home is overseeing arrangements. A reception will be hosted by her family on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 1:00pm at the Carlisle Country Club 1242 Harrisburg Pike, Carlisle, PA 17013.
