SCPO Samuel V. Young, Jr., US Navy (Retired) of Shermans Dale, PA, age 84, entered into eternal rest on December 25th, 2023 in Carlisle, PA. He was born on August 21, 1939 in Milton, PA to the late Samuel V. Young, Sr, and Dorethy (Lewis) Young. Sam graduated from Milton High School with the class of 1958. He attended various community colleges.
Serving his county as an aviation maintenance mechanic in the US Navy, he honored our country with 22 years of service including serving during active combat in the Vietnam War. He spent his sea time on seven different aircraft carriers and worked shore duty in squadrons. He wrote, updated, and verified maintenance requirement cards for new and used aircraft. He retired as Maintenance Chief in 1980.
Upon his Navy retirement, he went to work for CACI in Virginia Beach. A year later, he went to work for FMSO in Mechanicsburg, PA focusing on computer maintenance requirements for the US Navy and Marine Corps. He traveled extensively to Kuwait, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia to design programs for their aircraft and warehouse logistics. In 2004, he retired from civil services.
Watching movies and old TV westerns, traveling around the US, and meeting up with his breakfast club were just some of his favorite activities. As the grandkids were born, he often asked if the "kids" were coming! He was always "Chief Cook" at the annual family 4th of July picnic. Sad to say, his long good-bye began in 2016 when he began to experience symptoms of Alzheimer's dementia.
Sam is survived by his wife Beverly of 31 and ½ years; two brothers Jim Young of Milton, Tom Young (Julie) of Harrisburg; two sisters, Susan Dewald (Rodney) of Lewisburg and Linda Musser (Richard) of New Columbia, PA; three children, Lisa Sutton (John) of Pearisburg, VA, Jeffrey Young (Tammie) of Liberty, NC, and Alison Young of Danville, PA; two stepchildren, Bryan Allen of Shermans Dale, PA, and Shannon Allen (Carlos) of Pittsburgh, PA. Sam has 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his stepdaughter Amy Allen and granddaughter Mackenzie Riley.
