Ruth Cook McCoy, 97, of Carlisle, formerly of Johnstown, PA and Monroeville, PA died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home.
She was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Olive Gore Cook and the widow of Kenyon McCoy, who died April 9, 2012.
A woman of enormous vitality and zest for living, Ruth was a graduate of the Indiana Normal School, currently Indiana University of PA, with a BA in education. Beloved by students and parents alike, she taught elementary school for 39 years. Ruth undertook pilot's training during the years leading up to World War II. She loved to invite family and friends for Sunday dinner and was renowned for her roast beef and its simple recipe-"Put it in the oven, go to church, come home and it's deliciously done!" Ruth traveled solo through Europe and the Swiss Alps in her 50's. Articulate and humorous well into her 90's, she was twice voted queen of the Valentine's Day court at the Sarah Todd Home. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlisle and a former member of Grove Avenue United Methodist Church in Johnstown and McMasters United Methodist Church in Turtle Creek, PA.
