Russell W. Coe, formerly of Pittsburgh and long-time resident of Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at the Church of God Home, Carlisle.
He was born in Pittsburgh, on May 21, 1916, to the late William and Kathryn (nee Reingrover) Coe.
Russ retired from Gulf Oil Company in Pittsburgh and moved to Carlisle where he was well known for his philanthropy to many local organizations, as well as his generosity to national foundations. He was a veteran of World War II, and belonged to the Masonic Order - Syria Shrine in Cheswick, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and Guyasuta Lodge #513 in Pittsburgh. Russ fondly remembered his life in Pittsburgh and always enjoyed an opportunity to talk with people who loved the city as he did.
He had a life-long commitment to education and learning, and was a patron of music and the arts. Recipients of his generosity include the Bosler Free Library, the Cumberland County Historical Society, Samaritan Fellowship, Project S.H.A.R.E., the Association of the Blind, and many others. He was also dedicated to the medical care of sick children everywhere, and in 2011 received a permanent Gold Book inscription from Shriners Hospitals for Children - Philadelphia.
Russ enjoyed a good joke, lively conversation, a cocktail with dinner, beautiful flowers, classical music (as well as his favorite, Patsy Cline) and antiques. Especially Stafford-shire china from England. He was a modest gentleman who enjoyed visiting with family and friends, most recently at his 101st birthday celebration.
Russ is survived by nephews, Rob, Geoff, and Alan; and niece Suzanne. In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased by his brother Kenneth; and his long-time friend and companion Harry Goldby. Russ will be deeply missed by his long-time friends Dick and Shirley Chamberlain, Don and Anne Backenstow, Alma Stewart, Kathleen and Nick Nerangis, and his special friend and caregiver Barbara Saidis.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory - 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, with Chaplain Bradley Moore officiating. Interment will be private.
