Russell E. Mentzer

Russell E. Mentzer, Sr., 84, of Carlisle, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Although he will be missed here, his family and friends draw comfort in knowing they will see him again in eternity.
Born February 15, 1928 in Carlisle, he was a son of the late John and Anna Wilson Mentzer.
He attended Carlisle High School and later entered the US Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. In 1952 he returned home to marry the love of his life, Betty (Swartz) Mentzer. Russell and his father owned and operated Mentzer Auto Sales, Carlisle. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and retired in 1995 as a professional truck driver. Russell enjoyed life, his motorcycle, playing pool, and throwing darts. He was a member of the VFW Post 477, the Moose Lodge 761, the White Circle Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1299, the American Legion Post 101, all of Carlisle, and the Mechanicsburg Men’s Club.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty E. Mentzer of Carlisle; two sons, Rickey Mentzer (and wife, Sue) of Carlisle and Ron Mentzer (and companion, Susan Shepard) of Montana; one sister, Dorothy O’Hara of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Chrissy Mentzer of Williamsport, Brandie Mentzer (and companion, Matt Hockensmith) of Carlisle, Rickey Mentzer of Philadelphia, and Christopher Mentzer (and companion, Kelly Varner) of Newville; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robby and Russell Mentzer, Jr.; one daughter, Cathy Ann Mentzer; and one brother, John Mentzer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 10, 2012 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rev. Alan Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the funeral home and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.
