Roland J. Makibbin, 91, of Carlisle, passed away on October 20th, 2024. Roland was born on September 2nd, 1933, in Reedsville, PA.
He is the son of the late Arthur and Olive (Nesbit) Makibbin. Roland is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Caroline (Pry) Makibbin, his daughter, Pam Brenner (Andrew), his son, Dennis Makibbin (Clare), his daughter, Cathy Northcraft (Dennis), his son, Thomas Makibbin, his sister, Darlis Simonton (Tom), his 6 grandchildren, and his 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mazie Lewis.
In his earlier years, Roland served in the United States Navy on the USS Pomodon in the Korean War. He was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans Association. He was a member of their Holland Club for being qualified in submarines for more than 50 years. Roland lived in Hanover, PA for 18 years before moving to Carlisle in 1978. After his discharge from the military, Roland worked as an engineer at United Telephone Company for 42 years, ultimately retiring at what is now known as Sprint Mobile. He was also a Life Member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association.
He was a man of many passions. These interests included golfing, badminton, woodworking, reading, playing sudoku, and visiting casinos. Roland played badminton in several national senior games throughout the country. He was an avid college sports fan. Some of his favorite teams included Penn State, the Orioles, and The Baltimore Ravens. Roland enjoyed traveling with his wife, Caroline. Together they visited 49 of the 50 United States.
He was heavily involved with his community. Roland was a former deacon at United Church of Christ, a former Sunday school teacher, a Cubscout leader, and a member of the Carlisle American Legion. Roland enjoyed spending as much time with his family as possible, and he particularly enjoyed their holidays together. He never missed the chance to see his grandchildren's sports games.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 28th, 2024 from 10 A.M. - 11 A. M. followed by a memorial service at 11 A.M. at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, 2020 W Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
