RET. Petty Officer Robert W. Mercer, 67, of Carlisle, died Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving wife and Cindy and Jerry Robbins, a sister and brother in Christ.

Born in Washington, DC in 1957, he was the son of the late William and Claire (France) Mercer and husband of 32 years to Janice (Horne) Mercer.

Robert served for many years with the United States Navy, retiring as a Petty Officer First Class. He was an F-14 Jet Mechanic and received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon, Fifth Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Expeditionary Medal.

Robert also worked for Ryder Transportation and retired from the Northern School District. When he was on a ship in the military, he loved to watch sunrises and sunsets.

Being a mechanic, he loved to tinker and work on cars, especially Mustang’s. He also loved being outdoors and going to the mountains and staying in cabins. His memberships included the South Mountain Dillsburg VFW Post 6771, Dillsburg and Carlisle Shooting Range and Carlisle Fish & Game Commission.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children in Africa that the family supported: Zipora, a six-year-old girl who lives in Uganda and Umuheburayo, a ten-year-old boy who lives in Rwanda; his pets: Gracie and Chloe, his cats and Speckles, his dog as well as his sisters: Debbie Hobson and Jackie Brown.

He was preceded in death by his siblings: Mary McMahon, Billy Mercer and David Mercer.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Celebration of Life service 11:00 am Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, Ltd., 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, where the family will greet guests after 10:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, at 2:30 pm.
