Robert J. "Bob" Koester, Sr., age 90, of Carlisle and formerly of Scranton, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle after a brief illness.
He was born March 31, 1926 in Scranton to the late Christian and Marie (Dupre) Koester. He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Ann M. (Wielebinski) Koester of Carlisle.
Bob was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and attended the University of Scranton on the GI Bill after serving his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He continued his service in the Naval Reserves for 29 years achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer before his retirement. After his wartime service, Mr. Koester was a sales representative for Swift & Co. and later for the W.D. Donahue Food Brokerage until his retirement in 1988 when he and Ann relocated to Carlisle. During his years in Scranton, Bob was a former member of the South Catholic Men's Club, St. Mary's Parish Club, Scranton, a member of the American Legion, Post 948; Life Member of the Sampson Naval Station Veterans; and Life Member of Naval Enlisted Reserve Association. In Carlisle, he was a Life Member of the Carlisle BPO Elks Lodge #578; AARP; and a devoted member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his two children; son, Robert J. Koester Jr. of Scranton; daughter, Donna (Koester) Domenick (husband Ronald) of Carlisle. Four grandchildren; Amy(Domenick) Whiteman (husband Jason) of Fairfax, VA, Jeffrey Domenick (wife Martine) of Roswell, GA, Kristen (Domenick) Raisinghani (husband Arun) of Wheaton, IL, Robert J. Koester III (wife Mary Fran) of Scranton. Ten great-grandchildren; Tyler, Andrew and Ellison Whiteman of Fairfax, VA, Leni and Christian Domenick of Roswell, GA, Millen and Kiran Raisinghani of Wheaton, IL, James, Marion and Cate Koester of Scranton. Bob is also survived by three brothers; Paul Koester (wife Sharon) of Taneytown, MD, Edwin Koester (wife Sandy) of Springfield, IL and Joseph Koester (wife Pat) of Scranton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle, PA with the Very Rev. William C. Forrey as Celebrant. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors. There will be a viewing on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, General Fund, 152 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
