Robert H. “Bob” Rumpf, age 88, of Carlisle, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the Cumberland Crossings Nursing Home, Carlisle.
He was born May 30, 1928 in Philadelphia to the late Harry and Emma (Schneider) Rumpf and was the widower of Marjorie (Wolf) Rumpf who passed in September 2011.
Bob graduated from Northeast Public High School in Philadelphia in 1945 and was a 1949 graduate of Penn State with a BS in Forestry. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 and then earned his Master’s degree in Forest Economics from Duke University in 1954. Bob married Marjorie L. Wolf in February 1953. He began his career with the PA Department of Forest and Waters from 1949-1952. After receiving his Master’s degree, he was hired by the Glatfelter Pulp Wood Co. in VA. He later transferred to Carlisle to open the Carlisle District Office for Glatfelter. During his career, Bob expanded their woodland ownerships and established management planning for all their company lands. After 39 years of service, he retired in 1993 as Vice-President and General Manager. Bob was President and Director of the PA Forestry Association; a member of the Advisory Board at the School of Forest Resources from 1991-1995; served on the North Middleton Township Planning Commission for 10 years; was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Deacon and Trustee; served in Leadership in the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Bob was a great father and much loved by his family. He is survived by: his daughter, Becky A. (and husband Gordon) Moyer of Jonestown, PA; his sons, Frederick H. (and wife Nancy) Rumpf of Boston, MA, and Thomas A. (and wife Susan) Rumpf of Chalfont, PA; five grandchildren, Hannah Rumpf, Nathan Rumpf, Stephen Rumpf, Mattisan Rumpf and Sarah Rumpf; and two great-granddaughters, Delaney and Zoie Moyer; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, John and William Rumpf.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Gibelius and Rev. Jennifer McKenna officiating. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. There will be a viewing at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Personal Care staff of Cumberland Crossings, the staff of Homeland Hospice, and Dr. Lester Himmelreich, for the wonderful care they provided.
