Robert Leyon, 78, died September 23, 2014 at home of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Born July 28, 1936 in Newton, Mass to Renus Edward and Louise (Riblet) Leyon, his life was focused on his family, a dedication to teaching, and service to his community.
Bob graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BS degree from Williams College in 1958 and completed his advanced degrees in chemistry at Princeton University. "Dr Bob," as he was known to students, joined the faculty of Dickinson College in 1969 and retired in 1998. During his tenure, he served in many capacities, including Secretary of the Faculty, as well as Treasurer and President of the Dickinson Phi Beta Kappa chapter. His tall stature and upright bearing were seen as the college's Mace bearer who led the faculty procession during graduation ceremonies for almost 20 years, a position that he greatly enjoyed.
Bob served Dickinson's chemistry faculty as the chair of the department and was instrumental in guiding the department through a major curricular revision, modernizing and broadening the scope of the department, and assisting in the development of the biochemistry and molecular biology major.
His love of teaching and dedication to learning were complemented by a lifelong love of music and singing. In addition to participating in numerous choral ensembles, he was a charter member of Cantate Carlisle, and sang with the highly-acclaimed choral group from 1990-2012. He also served Cantate Carlisle as a board member, Treasurer, and board President. In a 2014 essay, Bob explained that "…music kept me more or less sane, being so different from chemistry, so rehearsal provided some time completely away from the concerns of my work."
Bob had wide-ranging interests that included Formula 1 auto racing, photography, cooking, travel, Masters-level competitive swimming, reading, and crossword puzzles. He accurately projected the image of a cultured gentleman – one with a sharp wit, high standards and a great sense of fun. His commitment to his community extended beyond music, and he was a founding and active member in the Retired Professionals of Dickinson College, participating in the music and photography discussion groups. He was also a board member and Treasurer of the Carlisle Preservation Alliance.
Bob faced the challenge of cancer with his typical grace and courage. His family extends their gratitude to the staff of Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and the Hospice of Central Pennsylvania.
Bob's life belied the stereotype of a compassionless scientist. He was a devoted father and brother, a generous friend, and a beloved husband. Bob Leyon truly left this world a better place through teaching, hard work, beautiful music, and love for others.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Carol Williams; son, Christopher Leyon (Kelley) of Medford, New Jersey; daughter, Rebecca Leyon of Portland, Oregon; brother, John Leyon (Althea) of St. Petersburg, Florida; twin sister, Elizabeth Dodge of Stratham, New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Jack and Olivia Leyon; several nieces and nephews; and his "good cat" Cleopatra.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be sent to Cantate Carlisle, P.O. Box 674, Carlisle, PA 17013. There will be a celebration of Bob's life held at Dickinson College later this fall, and details will be shared with the community when available.
