Robert B. Mowery, age 85, of Carlisle, PA passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at his residence with his wife by his side.
He was born July 1, 1933 in Newville, the son of the late Levi O. and Mary Cleo (Haller) Mowery.
In his youth, Bob enjoyed fishing The Big Spring in Newville; fishing trips to Canada; time at deer camp with family and friends; small game hunting a field with his father and favorite uncle Russ; and working the family orchards with his father and brother; Bob earned Eagle Scout status in Boy Scouts of America and was chosen to attend The National Boy Scout Jamboree.
A graduate of Newville High School, where he played basketball on the early 1950’s championship teams. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, Class of ’55, majoring in Pomology; was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
In Philadelphia, in 1956, Bob married Joan Wilent (his beloved Jonnie) who he had met at Penn State; with whom, he recently celebrated 62 years of marriage, during which they were blessed with four daughters.
Robert graduated as a jet fighter pilot from Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, as one of a few pilots chosen for gunnery training at Luke Air Force Base, Phoenix, Arizona. He was assigned in 1958 to a fighter squadron of the 2854th AB Wing at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City where he flew F84’s and F100’s.
Returning to PA, Bob was employed at Locust Point Quarries and for many years as a Company Rep. for Hempt Brothers Inc. in New Cumberland; he also was a board member of The Home Builders Assoc. of Harrisburg and a Beam Club member of ABC.
Through the years, Bob enjoyed tending his orchard, vegetable gardens and his very green lawn; propagating, pruning and cutting trees, chopping wood; building his home, boating on the River and lakes; fly tying, trips to Ocean City, NJ; living in the Pine Grove cabin; water color painting; watching sports, especially Penn State Football and always his best loved activities-fishing and hunting at which Bob was usually always quite successful. He also received numerous awards for speaking from Dale Carnegie.
Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Joan E. Mowery of Carlisle, four daughters: Chandra Mowery Baird, San Francisco, CA, Tara L. (David) Getchonis, Natick, MA, Wenda L. (Ted) Schultz, Litchfield, NH, Jennifer M. (Brian) Marsh, Hoboken, NJ, eight grandchildren: Katherine (Michael) Perry, Craig Schultz, Cleo Schultz, Karleigh Schultz, Kelly Getchonis, Kerry Getchonis, Lillian Marsh and Levi Marsh, and a sister-in-law: Helen Mowery, Newville, PA, and by a niece, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Carolyn Mowery, and a brother, Donn H. Mowery, and nieces, Kristine Maria and Hannah Mowery.
Funeral service will be at 12 Noon on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West Street, Carlisle, PA 17013, with Rev. Jim VanZandt, officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville. A viewing will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 11:00 A.M. until time of the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Carlisle United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Rosebud Sioux Project, c/o Mission Central, 5 Pleasant View Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
