Dick and Shirley were married for 57 years and had three children, Robert Wood, Cheryl Thompson and Vonda Moon, all of whom now reside in York County. Dick was passionate about his family. He was devoted to Shirley and missed her deeply. He spoke routinely and proudly with friends about his children and their families. Robert is married to Cheryl Wood with children, Valerie Wood, Ryan Wood, Bradley Wood. Cheryl is married to Timothy Thompson with children, Kelly Thompson, Scottie Thompson. Vonda is married to Carl Moon, with child Alton Moon. Dick's siblings are Doris Brackbill of Boiling Springs, Millie Skelly and Marlin Wood of Mechanicsburg and Nevin Wood of Mt. Holly Springs.
Dick was a member of the 1951 class at Boiling Springs High School. He honorably served in the United States Army during the time of the Korean Conflict. After returning from the service he joined AMP, Inc. where he was employed for 42 years, many of which were as the Carlisle Plant Manager.
Dick was active in his community, his church and in freemasonry. His community involvement included membership in the Carlisle Elk Lodge #578, the Goodwill Fire Company and the Executive Club of Central PA. Dick attended Second Presbyterian Church and was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he was on the Board of Trustees and served in many committees and capacities. He also met daily with "the breakfast club", a group of men who enjoyed sharing their respective journeys.
Dick's masonic journey began with Cumberland Star Lodge #197, based in Carlisle. Dick served twice as Worshipful Master and held offices for much of his life. He was also District Deputy Grand Master for the 3rd Masonic District as well as a volunteer Admissions Counselor for the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown. He was a member of the York Rite Chapters in Carlisle. In 1964 he became a member of the Scottish Rite where he held several offices. Due to his service as an advisor in the Carlisle Chapter of the Order of DeMolay, he received DeMolay's Legion of Honor. Dick was also a member of Zembo Temple and Tall Cedars of Lebanon. Because of his investment in freemasonry and his community, he was initiated by the Supreme Council as a 33° Mason.
Dick enjoyed tinkering and always had projects with vehicles or around the house. He restored cars and tractors and enjoyed working on and showing his award winning 1948 Pontiac Convertible.
