Richard P. Clay, 96, of Carlisle, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2019.
He was born October 13, 1923 in Carlisle to the late Clarence M. and Nellie M. (Ludt) Clay and was the widower of Betty L. (Trostle) Clay.
Richard honorably served his country in the US Army during WWII in the 88th Infantry Division. After his military service he worked for and later retired from Conrail after 42 years as a railroad car inspector. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.
Richard is survived by one son, Jed R. (wife Maureen) Clay of Carlisle; one daughter, Dee A. (husband Wade) Witmer of Herndon, VA; one sister, Janet Grimm of Dillsburg; five grandchildren, Abigail and Cale Witmer and Lauren, Jarus and Madelyn Clay. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Donald J. Clay, Markel D. Clay and Marie C. Sanderson.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013. Burial will follow at Letort Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care, 14900 Conference Center Dr. Chantilly, VA 20151.
