Richard L. Burgard, 86, of Carlisle, died at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, Hollidaysburg, PA. with his loving wife and family by his side. He was born Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 1928 in Carlisle to the late John R. Burgard and Romayne (Foster) Burgard. Richard was the husband of Carolyn (Ocker) Berry Burgard whom he married on August 11, 1961. In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his brother John M. Burgard.
Richard's survivors include his wife, Carolyn of fifty-three years; his children Tanya M. Doporcyk and her husband Michael, Terri A. Reisinger and her husband Robert; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Durnin, Valda Peffer and brother Robert Burgard; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard graduated from Carlisle High School and Carlisle Commercial College. He was a Navy WWII Veteran, he felt honored to serve his country, enlisting at age seventeen, serving on the USS Perry DD844, Korean War aboard the USS John Hood, The Naval Reserves for ten years, life member of the VFW Post #477. Retired from Daily Express of Carlisle in 1990. A life time member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church.
Richard enjoyed dancing with his wife to music from The Big Band Era. Special time with his daughter, Tanya, riding their horses. Their summer place in Delaware gave him the opportunity to fish, crab, clam, boating and just be a beach bum, and always their dogs to love and play with.
Richard had a real joy of life and sense of humor. A wonderful husband, father and friend. A twinkle in his blue eyes and his million dollar smile. He was loved and will be deeply missed…
All are welcome to join Richard's family for funeral services at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rev. Matthew T. Purdy officiating. Interment will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
