Richard C. Jones

Rev. Richard C. Jones, 86 of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Chapel Pointe Carlisle, surrounded by his family.
He was born November 1, 1933 in Pine Grove to the late Paul H. and Catherine (Madenford) Jones.
Rev. Jones was a 1951 graduate of Pine Grove High School, received his Bachelor’s Degree from Gettysburg College in 1955 and received his Master’s Degree from Gettysburg Seminary in 1958. Rev. Jones was appointed as spiritual leader for many churches, including, The Sacramento Parish, Spring Glen, PA in 1958, Concordia Charge, Mountville, PA in 1960, St Matthew, Lancaster, PA in 1965, where he served the deaf ministry and conducted services in sign language. In the late 1960’s, he took over as the Synodical Priority Program Coordinator where he played a large role in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in Chicago. Rev. Jones was appointed to Assistant to the Bishop, Central PA Synod in 1971, and served there until his retirement in 1988. Like most Lutheran Ministers, his work was not over and he was appointed as interim pastor at St Matthew’s in Schuylkill Haven, PA in 1988 and St Matthew’s in Bloomsburg, PA in 1993. Rev. Jones was an eagle scout and loved to travel. His travels took him to 6 different continents and over 100 different countries.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice (Reed) Jones, Mechanicsburg and they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage, February 12, 2020; children, David R. (Pamela) Jones, Mechanicsburg; Linda M. (Carl) Botti, New Bloomfield, PA; Peter R. (Maryclare) Jones, Ashburn, VA and Stephen P. (Lisa) Jones, Benicia, CA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; David, Jazmine, Reed, Will, Tyler, Danika and Sephora.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant brother.
Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, January 17, 2020 at St Mark Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg, at 11am. Inurnment will take place at St John’s Cemetery, Pine Grove, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Mark Lutheran Church.
