Rex B. Asten, 86, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at his residence with his beloved family by his side.
He was born February 25, 1933 in Arlington, MA to the late Oliver B. and Sophronia P. (Smith) Asten.
Rex will be remembered for the love and care he provided for his family, his gentle caring nature, his great sense of humor, his excellent communication skills, and his creative side. He was truly loved and respected by all. The Asten’s purchased a gentleman’s farm so their children could grow up sharing their love of animals. He honorably served his country in the US Coast Guard from 1951 through 1954. He played football under coach Woody Hayes at the Ohio State University. He was employed by IBM for over thirty years before he retired as a manager. While working at IBM, Rex played Santa Claus for many years. In his free time, he loved playing board games with family, reading, playing chess, watching sports, solving crossword puzzles, golfing, and watching dirt track races. Rex coached his sons Little League teams in Hampden Township for several years. Rex was a former member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, while he was a member his family sponsored a Vietnamese family. He was currently a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle.
Rex is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carole J. (Rennick) Asten of Carlisle; and four children, Mark S. (wife Romayne) Asten of San Francisco, CA, Tim D. (wife Kim) Asten of Mechanicsburg, Sandra “Sue” Asten of Mechanicsburg, and Michelle A. (husband Richard) Kurtz of Millerstown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Asten and one grandson, Jeremy Asten.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 21 South Bedford Street Carlisle, PA 17013 with Rev. Richard G. Lorenz officiating. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends Animal Society, www.bestfriends.org/ to support Rex’s love of animals.
