Paul Elwood Miller

June 13, 1939 — November 29, 2024

Shippensburg

Paul Elwood Miller, of Newville, passed peacefully November 29, 2024 at the age of 85. He is survived by daughters, Leanne Miller and Kristi Miller Witmer, his brother James Miller (spouse Dorothy) and grandsons Spencer and Christian Witmer, along with several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Janet I. Miller along with his siblings Marian and Glenn.

Born June 13, 1939, to Alexander E. and Blanch (Oyler) Miller, Paul grew up on the family farm on the outskirts of Newville where he learned the value of hard work and discipline at the hand of his stern schoolteacher father. Though his mother hoped he would become a pastor, Paul enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 and served until his honorable discharge in 1960. After a few years of service, collecting stories his grandsons were too young to hear about, Paul met and married Janet. Ever the doting husband and provider, Paul was a supervisor and retired from Reeves Hoffman upon 35 years of service. After his day job, he would promptly come home, ditch his suit and tie and moonlight as a carpenter, electrician, plumber and painter; truly a jack of all trades.

Paul was a quiet man, but was fiercely dedicated to family and friends and ever the optimist. He was always willing to lend a hand for projects, scout camp, and in later years, building dollhouses for his wife. He was a loyal supporter of his youngest grandson, and was always in the audience for every theater performance. He hunted (though not very well, by his own admission) but mostly enjoyed cooking for the others at his brother-in-law's cabin. His true passion was filling his family's plates when he wasn't beating them at cards!

The family would like to thank the staff of Green Ridge Village for caring for both Paul and Janet during their time as residents.

There will be no public services per Paul's wishes. A family gathering will take place to celebrate Paul's life at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Paul's memory to the Alzheimer’s Association: Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 2595 Interstate Dr. Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
