Paul J. Biebel

Paul J. Biebel, PhD, 87, of Carlisle, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at his residence.
He was born on February 26, 1928 in Belleville, IL to the late Nicholas H. and Lena Brauer Biebel.
Paul graduated from Litchfield High School, Litchfield, IL, then graduated with a Bachelors in Science from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 where he also was a member of the Notre Dame Glee Club. He then attended the University of Kentucky and Southern Illinois University before completing his Masters of Science in Biology from St. Louis University in 1955. He later completed his PhD in Biology from the University of Indiana in 1963. Paul retired as a Professor of Biology at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA where he taught General Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and many other courses in Biology from 1963-1991. He previously had been an Instructor of Biology at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL and also a Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota and at The Pennsylvania State University, Middletown, PA. In 2013, Dr. Biebel received an award in New York City for his lifetime commitment to the Botanical Society of America. Dr. Biebel led his students and others on guided tours during the annual Spring Wildlife Festival in the Smokey Mountains from 1967-1991. He was a longtime member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. He was President of the Harrisburg Chapter of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association from 1990-1991. He was a member of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. He was a supporter of the University of Notre Dame and Dickinson College sports and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a season ticket holder of the Harrisburg Symphony for many years. He was a founding member of the Retired Professionals of Dickinson College Music Lovers Group. He was a tenor in the Dickinson College choir for many years. He was a very devoted father and grandfather and attended all of his grandchildren's events.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Ann "Nan" Biebel of Carlisle, whom Paul married in the Log Cabin Chapel at Notre Dame; five sons, Thomas N. (and wife Maria) Biebel of Ventnor City, NJ, Joseph A. (and wife Kathleen) Biebel of Marietta, GA, David P. (and wife Amy) Biebel of Cliffwood, NJ, Donald A. (and wife Teri) Biebel of Shepherdstown, WV and Christopher L. Biebel of Atlantic City, NJ; one daughter, Ann M. Biebel of New York, NY; ten grandchildren, Elaine Biebel-Betz, Nicholas (and wife Amanda) Biebel, Matthew Biebel, Stephen Biebel, Laura Biebel and fiancé Daniel Moore, Mark Biebel, Jennifer Biebel, Amanda Biebel, Amelia Biebel and Gordon Biebel; one brother, Nicholas (and wife Del) Biebel of Litchfield, IL; and one sister, Diane (and husband Leo) Keilman of The Dalles, OR.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Shrine Church, 140 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle with Rev. Brian J. Wayne officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Carlisle. There will be a visitation at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services.
