Paul Ellsworth Wert, 88, of Plainfield, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Residence, Harrisburg.
Born December 25, 1924 in Carlisle, he was a son of the late Clayton George Jacob and Susan Catherine Lebeck Wert.
Paul started out as a farmer and that was one of the greatest loves of his life. He was an amazing mechanic and builder (he could fix anything put in from of him) which led to him building many homes in the Carlisle area. Paul decided to leave the building business to become a truck driver and he drove for Gabler Trucking and Daily Express Trucking for twenty-two years. Paul was a former member of the Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church and attended the New Hope Church of God, Carlisle. Paul loved farming, tractors and anything Ford. He was a loving husband and a caring man. Paul was an amazing fighter and he fought cancer like a boxer in the ring.
Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Reba J. Wert; one son Robert E. Wert (and wife, Suzy) of Mechanicsburg, two daughters, Paula V. Heckman of Carlisle and Patricia A. Finkey (and husband, Dennis) of Tallahassee, FL; step-children, Susan M. Cordell of Virginia, Steven P. Gleixner of New York and William A. Gleixner of Marysville, James Hoover of Fannettsburg; also step-son-in-law, Roger Earley; three brothers, Harold E. Wert of Boiling Springs, Ray E. Wert of Carlisle, and Merle Wert, of Mt. Joy; sister, Sylvia Klick of Gardners; five grandchildren, Denise Morrison of Lancaster, Donald George Wert of Newville, Gregory Walter Heckman of Exeter, Douglas Paul Heckman of Pittsburgh, Sara Elizabeth Sherant of Centre Hall; two step granddaughters, Angela Verdekal and Tabitha Hayden; ten great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola Grace Thumma Wert and his second wife, Linda Krone Gleixner Wert; one son, William Wert; two grandsons, Dakota Dwight Wert and Cody Ellsworth (Elvis) Wert; one brother, Dale E. Wert; two sisters, Lois Wert and Pearl Bouder; and one step-daughter, Judy Earley and son-in-law, Walter H. Heckman.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Brethren in Christ Church, 1155 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle with Rev. Dennis Killinger, Rev. Richard L. Reese, and Rev. Randall L. Zook officiating. Burial will be held in the North Middleton Church of God Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the church.
