Surrounded by family and friends, Nancy Jean LaMont passed away on Saturday, October 29 at the age of 57. She was born December 27, 1953 in Ames, IA, to Bernard LaMont and Helen Davis LaMont Bailey.
She graduated from Penn High School in 1971 and she received her BA in Political Science from Allegheny College in 1974.
Nancy went on to earn her JD from the Dickinson School of Law in 1978 and worked in the Pittsburgh law firm of Meyer, Unkovic, and Scott in Corportate and Estate Planning for over 15 years . In 1996, she opened her own law practice to business and non-profit clients. She was an active member in the American Bar Association, as well as a committee chair and lecturer in the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Nancy formerly served as a Trustee to the Dickinson School of Law and published several articles in the Dickinson Law Review.
She was elected a fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 1996, an honor afforded to fewer than one percent of the lawyers in each state. In April 1997, Nancy was recognized as one of Pennsylvania's 50 Best Women in Business by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
In 2000, Nancy relocated to Carlisle, PA, to become the Director of Continuing Education at the Dickinson School of Law. She was later appointed Assisstant Dean for Administration, overseeing facilities administration, planning and staff support. As a Trustee to the Dickinson School of Law, she was instrumental in the negotiations leading to the merger of the Dickinson School of Law and Penn State University. Later, as an Administative Dean, she was integral in the construction of Lewis Katz building in State College, PA and the renovation of Trickett Hall in Carlisle, PA.
In addition to her many accomplishments, Nancy was an avid gardener, voracious reader, and loving caretaker of several pets. She is remembered for her compassion, kindness, capability, and tireless work ethic.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Robert Wenzel of Pittsburgh, PA, her children Arthur Westmore of State College, PA, Abigail Wenzel of Carlisle, PA, Alexander Wenzel of Dillsburg, PA, and her siblings, David LaMont of Muncy, PA, Robert LaMont of Durham, New Hampshire, Carol Berry of Ligonier, PA, and John Bailey of Philadelphia, PA.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, 219 North Hanover Street in Carlisle, PA, with a reception immediately following in the Law School’s Lewis Katz Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dickinson School of Law, 150 South College Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
