Mildred Decker of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014, at the age of 89. Her family is grateful for the many years of memories.
Mildred was born on May 21, 1925, in Claryville, Missouri, a small town on the Mississippi River. She was the oldest of 5 children of the late Charles and Hazel (Cotton) Moore. After a flood wiped out Claryville in 1943, Mildred's family moved to Chester, Illinois, on the other side of the river. Throughout her life, Mildred was a supporter of the Red Cross because of the lumber they provided her family to build their new home in Chester.
In Chester, Mildred met her husband, Adolph (Emo) Decker, who she wed in 1946. They both worked in the shoe manufacturing industry, living in Chester as well as several small towns in Missouri. They eventually relocated to Carlisle in 1960 where Mildred lived for the rest of her life.
In Carlisle, Mildred worked for the Kinney Shoe Corporation where she was the first woman to be a spec writer. She subsequently attended Harrisburg Area Community College and accepted an accounting position with the Department of Defense at the New Cumberland Navy Depot, and later, at the Carlisle Army War College. At the War College, Mildred thrived, earning several commendations and promotions, until she retired in 1990.
Mildred was a long-standing and devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women, volunteering for several events and causes. After her husband passed, she joined the St. Patrick's singles group as well.
She was also a member of the Civic Club of Carlisle, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and the American Business Women's Association (ABWA). She was well known for her delicious pies which were sold to raise money for the ABWA. She also participated in several area card clubs, an activity she shared with her husband.
Mildred is survived by her sisters Virginia Moore and Geraldine Hindman and a brother Charles Moore, all of Illinois; her daughter Phyllis and her husband Richard Lindsay of Carlisle; her daughter Susan and her husband Art Jaso of Silver Spring, Maryland; her grandson Marc Lindsay and his wife Jennifer of Carlisle; her granddaughter Danielle Beish and her husband Richard of Carlisle; and her grandson Garrett Jaso of Boulder, Colorado. There are also four great-grandchildren, Connor and Abigail Lindsay and Corbin and Abel Beish.
Her family would like to thank all of her extended family and friends for their friendship and support over the years. All are welcome to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle, PA at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 20. There will be visitation with the family beginning at 10 am.
