Michael Burke Devlin

Michael Burke Devlin passed away on May 1, 2021, at home in Carlisle, PA. He was predeceased by his first wife of 35 years, Carol Ann Andyshak Devlin; his father, James Cornelius Devlin; his mother, Helen Burke Devlin; and his sister, Juliette Devlin Milanese. He is survived by his wife of 7 years, Fran (Ruscavage) Carothers Devlin; his brothers, J. Dennis Devlin and wife Susan of Pittsburgh and H. Barrett Devlin and wife Teresa of North Carolina; three step-children: Nicholas Carothers, Camp Hill; Nathan Carothers, Upper Marlboro, MD; and Lauren Carothers Jelle, Camp Humphreys, South Korea. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews, whom he adored, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. Left to mourn his passing are many faithful friends, who stood by his side during his four-year battle with squamous cell carcinoma.
Born in Belle Vernon, PA, Michael Devlin attended Somerset Area schools and graduated in 1967. Even as a student, Mike displayed special qualities and a propensity to serve others. He was nominated “Lion of the Month” in December of ’67 by his senior classmates, who chose him based upon the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and service to his school and community.
He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania before graduating in 1972 from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting & Financial Administration. He was a Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brother. He was a life member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the American Institute of CPA’s from 1976 to 2006, working nearly 47 years for the accounting firm of Boyer & Ritter, LLC, formerly as a Principal and, most recently, as a Consultant. Since 2002 Mike has also been closely affiliated with LeTort Trust of Camp Hill, an independent trust company, where he was a member of the Board of Directors.
At Dickinson School of Law, Mike served as an adjunct professor of accounting for approximately 28 years, where he taught basic accounting to fledgling law students.
Mike was a life member of the Kiwanis Club of Carlisle, and was recognized in 2014 as a Legion Honor Member. He was a member of the Greater Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce and the West Shore Elks. For 12 years, he was Treasurer for Leadership Cumberland, an organization that promotes community leadership skills and encourages a deeper appreciation of Cumberland County.
Involved with the Todd Baird Lindsey Devlin (TBLD) Foundation for nearly 20 years, he was a board member and former vice president.
He was a former board member of the Carlisle Regional Medical Center, where he served for almost 7 years. He was a board member of the Carlisle Hospital for 9 years, serving as Treasurer for 4 years. He was the former Treasurer of the Acoustic Neuroma Association, where he served for 8 years, helping it to become the first organized in Carlisle.
A faithful member of St. Patrick Parish of Carlisle, he was also Treasurer of the Carlisle Area Religious Council for nearly 20 years. He also served for 6 years as the Finance Committee Chairman at St. Patrick’s Church.
Mike was Treasurer for Albert H. Masland when Al ran for House of Representatives; he was also Treasurer for Al’s campaign for judgeship.
He served on the board of the Stoneridge Homeowner’s Association at Wintergreen, Virginia, for 14 years; he was Treasurer for 11 years. He had a long-time presence at Wintergreen (since the early 90’s) and enjoyed returning to his home there and entertaining his friends and family in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Mike was also a 20-year member of the Bailey Club International, a social organization of friends and colleagues.
A true believer in the mission of United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, Mike served as a former member of the Planned Giving Committee, as well as co-chair of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society from 2009 to 2014. In 2017, the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County honored Mike with the Alexis de Tocqueville Humanitarian award.
Most recently, Mike became a supporter of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, an organization that promotes free enterprise and educates high school students about the American free enterprise system.
The family wishes to thank the following for their loving care: Dr. Salah Almokadem and staff at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute; the wonderful nurses at Hospice of Central PA; the Emergency Room Staff and ICU nurses at Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital; Mike’s physician and friend, Dr. Philip Neiderer; and special friends, W. Robert Unger and Barbara Gardner, who were with him at his passing.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive Carlisle, PA 17015. A live stream of the Memorial Mass can be viewed by visiting www.saintpatrickchurch.org and clicking on live streaming at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021. Friends and family attending Mass will be required to wear a mask and maintain social distance.
