Maynard B Williamson was born in Englewood, New Jersey on March twelfth, 1922, to the late James & Ethel Burdon Williamson and soon thereafter moved with his family to Upper Nyack, New York. He was home schooled for his first two years then completed his college preparation in public schools. He earned a scholarship and matriculated at Princeton University. In 1942 he enlisted in The US Navy and in January, 1943 graduated from Princeton with high honors and entered Midshipman's School at Columbia
University.
Barney was awarded his Ensign commission on June sixteenth, 1943 and the next day married Joan Brewer. After anti-submarine warfare training he was assigned to the USS Maloy, DE 791 which was under construction in Orange, Texas. After commissioning, his ship was ordered to service in the Atlantic and subsequently designated as command ship for Major General Gerhardt of the 29th Infantry Division during the Omaha Beach Landings at Normandy. After the close of WWII he went on inactive duty and in 1956 resigned from the Navy.
During the next several decades he was employed in several positions in industry culminating in 1962 with assignment as the Hercules Powder Company representative in Mexico. During this period he and his wife had two sons, Christopher and James. For over two decades, Barney continued to represent Hercules in international assignments finally resident in Asia as Director, Far East. In addition he was active in non-corporate activities including presidency of the American Chamber of Commerce of Japan and chairmanship of the Asian Pacific Chamber of American Chambers.
Following a divorce, Barney married Taeko Yasuda in Tokyo in January, 1974. In 1985 he retired and the couple moved to the house in Carlisle, Pennsylvania that had been built in the 1920's by his grandfather. Over the years, having spent graduate semesters at Delaware University and Mexico City College, in 1989 he decided to return to academic pursuits and in 1991, he was awarded a Masters in Public Administration from Shippensburg University. In 2000 Barney and Taeko became residents of Jenner's Pond in West Grove, Pennsylvania, a continuing care retirement community and in 2007 they returned to Carlisle. During his retirement he continued to serve the community through several activities including the directorship of Princeton-in-Asia, the Small Business Development Center and, with his wife, Taeko, volunteer work with Hospice.
