MaryPat Wentzel, 82, of Carlisle, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at her home after a short illness.
She was born in West Palm Beach, FL, on September 5, 1935, to James B. and Theresa Merhar Neill and was the widow of John K. Wentzel, who died on December 17, 2016, after 59 years of marriage.
MaryPat graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1953, and Hood College, Frederick, MD, in 1957. Prior to moving to Carlisle, she taught elementary school in the Philadelphia area for several years. She was a longtime member of the First United Church of Christ, Carlisle, and a life member of the Carlisle Travelers Club.
MaryPat was a member of the Cumberland County Historical Society, where she volunteered and served as a docent, receiving the volunteer of the year award in 1997. She was chairman and an editor of “Past Receipts, Present Recipes,” a historical cookbook published by the CCHS in 1996. She was active with Two Mile House as a docent and committee member. MaryPat was a past board member of the YWCA in Carlisle and the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home. She volunteered at the Bosler Library’s “Bookery” and at the Thornwald Home, where she was honored as volunteer of the year in 1998.
MaryPat and John were avid antique toy collectors and eagerly anticipated their annual getaways to Grenada in the Caribbean. MaryPat enjoyed hunting for treasures at yard sales, white wine with ice, and shoes—especially if they were on sale.
She will be pleased to be reunited with her beloved husband and will be missed by her family, friends, and feline friend Ellie Mae.
She is survived by: two sons, James B. Wentzel (fiancé Kim Patterson) of Dillsburg, PA, Charles K. Wentzel (husband Kevin Fullerton) of Hoboken, NJ; a daughter, Susan E. Wentzel of Silver Spring, MD; and two grandsons, Evan C. and Adam M. (wife Toni) Wentzel.
