Mary Lucille Swartz

October 31, 1938 — June 4, 2013

Mary Lucille "Lucy" Swartz, 74, of Carlisle, went home to be with her Lord and Savior after a short battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Cumberland Crossings in Carlisle.

Born on Oct. 31, 1938, in Broxton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Edna Smith.

On Sept. 20, 1958, Lucy married the late Richard H. "Dick" Swartz in the Beaver Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL.

Lucy graduated from Andrew Jackson Senior High School in Jacksonville in 1957. She met Dick when he was stationed there during his time in the Marine Corps and the two married in 1958. They then returned to Dick's native Carlisle, PA, to build a life. Lucy was one of the original charter members of the Carlisle Baptist Church. She taught children's Sunday School there for 52 years and sang in the church choir. She was a constant support to Dick in his various business ventures. Lucy loved traveling. Highlights included visiting family in Florida, attending reunions, and embarking on adventures out West, to Rehoboth Beach and in the Caribbean. She enjoyed taking day trips with her girls. One of Lucy's greatest joys in life was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She was very active, and enjoyed participating in group exercise classes. In her earlier years, she was an avid bowler. Lucy was always willing to serve others, and her southern hospitality knew no limits.

She is survived by her three daughters, Dottie L. (Mark) Wettstein, Karen L. (Kenneth) Stum, and Amy S. (John) Bitner – all of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Nathan Richard (Cassandra) Davis, Kendra Lee (Chris) Long, Kyle Lewis Stum, and Zachary Mark Wettstein – all of Carlisle; and several aunts and uncles, and many cousins.

Lucy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years on Nov. 30, 2011.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 10, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Carlisle Baptist Church, 701 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle. Pastor Ed Roman will officiate. A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Hoffman Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle.
