Martha Snyder, age 95, of Carlisle, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Forest Park Healthcare Center in Carlisle.
She was born May 14, 1921 on a farm outside New Kingstown, PA, was the eldest daughter of the late Lawrence David and Edith Mae (Finkenbinder) Weary and was the widow of the late J. Alvin Snyder.
Martha successfully completed the eighth grade in Plainfield, PA, but quit school to help raise her younger sisters. Once her siblings were old enough, she worked as a nanny for several families in Carlisle and Plainfield and later worked at the Eatman Dikeman Paper Mill in Upper Holly before marrying J. Alvin Snyder on May 20, 1942. After her marriage, she quit working to help operate the farm and to raise a family. She kept busy with her family but found time to be active in the community. She served as the tax assessor for West Pennsboro Township. She was active in 4-H and spent many years delivering for Meals on Wheels. She was an active granger participating in the Plainfield Grange, Pomona County Grange and on the state and national levels. She was very active in Church Women United and was a Lutheran Belle.
She is survived by her seven children, Joyce (Earl) Heckendorn, James (Donna) Snyder, Joan (Norman) Miller, and Gary (Bonnie) Snyder, all of Carlisle. Susan (Curt) Gruber Danbury, CT, David (Rebecca) Snyder of Petatlan, Mexico and Kathryn (Ronald) Barrick of Duncannon, PA; three sisters, Betty Tritt, Jeanne Speck and Joanne (William) Shearer; a sister-in-law, Betty Jean Weary; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Maynard, Robert and Merle Weary; a sister-in-law, Treva Weary; four brothers-in-law, Barney Mentzer, James Miller, Dale Tritt and Francis Speck; and three sisters, Anna Gayle Mentzer, Mary Louise Weary and Ruth Irene Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Rev. David L. Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Plainfield. There will be a viewing from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2070 Newville Road, Plainfield, PA 17081 where Martha was a member for 74 years.
