Mabel "Bert" Torrence passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 7, 1938 to the late Edward Gardner and Jeannette Burgyes Hays. She was a graduate of Carlisle High School and Penn State University. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. James Edward Torrence who died in 1971 while serving in Vietnam.
Mabel is survived by two sons: James Frederick Torrence (wife Penny Breitenbach) of Montgomery Village, MD, and Gardner Hays Torrence (wife Julie Pucher) of Gaithersburg, MD. She was grandmother to Captain James Joseph Torrence (wife Nerelyn Bercaw), NYC; Kyle Gardner Torrence, NYC; Matthew Hays Torrence and Ryan Gardner Torrence, Gaithersburg, MD. Additional survivors are: Her brother Raphael Smead Hays II (wife Janice Corfield), Carlisle; her sister Ellinor Hays Dyke (husband Gene Dyke); nephews Richard Frey, Edward Gardner Hays II, and niece Jeannette Metzger Frey and her son Jesse Delaurier.
Mabel served as a Director at Frog, Switch, and Manufacturing Company for 26 years. She was a member of the Carlisle Civic Club and Co-Chairperson of the Club's Naturalization Program for several years. She served on the Vaughn Ahl Scholarship Committee and was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 6, 2017 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA. The service will be officiated by Reverend Dr. Jeffrey W. Gibelius, Pastor, and Reverend Jennifer J. McKenna, Associate Pastor. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at West Point Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013 or The American Cancer Society-East Central Division, PO Box 897, Hershey, PA 17033.
