M. Jeanne Auman

October 16, 1922 — February 1, 2018

M. Jeanne Auman, age 95, died peacefully on Thursday, February 1, 2018 with loving family by her side at the Thornwald Nursing Home, Carlisle.
She was born October 16, 1922 in Pittsburgh to the late George and Mary Katherine (Schaeffer) Swartz and was the widow of George A. Auman who passed March 12, 2012. They had been married for 67 years.
Jeanne always used her middle name to avoid confusion with several other family members named Mary. She graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1939 and Indiana State College (now IUP) in 1943. Following graduation, she was a civilian employee with the United States Army Signal Corps in Arlington, VA where she met her future husband, George. They were married on July 9, 1945. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, they returned to Central PA where George attended Shippensburg College and Jeanne taught at the former Stevens School in Carlisle School District where she had the opportunity to be one of the first kindergarten teachers in the district. She resigned in 1953 to take care of their two daughters. She later returned to teaching 2nd grade at Boiling Springs in the South Middleton School District. Jeanne was active in the Brownies and Girl Scouts as a group leader for many years. She also enjoyed traveling, sewing, doing cross stitch, reading, baking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Thanksgiving, she would bake 40-50 varieties of cookies for the holidays.
George and Jeanne loved camping, first in their tent and then their RV. They traveled to 48 different states and coast to coast in Canada. They also toured Europe, the Virgin Islands, Mexico and Hawaii. After years of teaching, they retired from teaching and volunteered at the Bosler Library in Carlisle and the Collier Library in Naples, FL where they resided during the winter. Jeanne also volunteered at the teddy bear museum in Naples. Jeanne was a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, where she served as deacon, taught Sunday school, taught vacation Bible school and was active in many Presbyterian women’s groups.
She is survived by: two daughters, Carol (husband Jack) Sprecher and Connie (husband Garry) Kuykendall, both of Carlisle; three granddaughters, Barbara (husband Phil) Dyche, Stephanie (husband Scott) Stump and Diane Casner; seven great-grandchildren, Corbin, Brandin and Ethin Dyche, Shelby “G.G.” Shank, Ryan Stump and Caiden and Peyton Casner; a niece, Lynn Amidon; and nephews, Bob, Jim, and David Swartz. In addition to her parents and husband, Jeanne was preceded in death by her brother and his wife, George “Bud” and Jeanne Swartz.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA with her minister, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey W. Gibelius officiating.
The family would like to thank both the Personal Care, Nursing staff, and Physical Therapy department at the Thornwald Home for their kindness and compassion shown to their mother.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jeanne’s memory to Second Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
