Lester William "Bill" Burkholder, Jr.

Lester William "Bill" Burkholder, Jr., age 87, of Carlisle, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Cumberland Crossings, Carlisle.
He was born April 12, 1929 in Carlisle to the late Lester W. Sr. and Virginia (Roberts) Burkholder. Bill was the widower of Mary Ann (Wall) Burkholder whom he met at a church event in Iowa and married three years later. She passed away September 8, 2011 after 61 years of marriage.
Bill was a 1947 graduate of Carlisle High School. He went on to Lehigh University where he played baseball, basketball and was quarterback for the football team. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in marketing. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean Conflict. Bill was a co-owner of the former Early's Furniture Store. He was a member of the Romeo's (Retired Old Men Eating Out), past Chairman of the United Way, past Chairman of the Board at Farmer's Trust Co. and Financial Trust Corp.; former President of Early's Furniture Store, past President of the Kiwanis Club, former member of the Board of YMCA, was a Co-Founder of Opportunity Homes, past Trustee at Second Presbyterian Church, past Board member at Carlisle Country Club and a member of First Church of God in Carlisle.
He is survived by a brother, Kirby (and wife Joy) Burkholder of Carlisle; a sister, June Lutz of Carlisle; daughter-in-law, Cathie Burkholder of Carlisle; son-in-law, Andrew Kerr of Newville; four grandchildren, Stephanie Killian of Newville and her significant other, Brian Miller, Timothy (and wife Jenn) Kerr of Newville, John (and wife Chelsea) Kerr of York and Kristina (and husband Luke) Deatrick of Newville; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Lester William "Bucky" Burkholder, III, his daughter, Kathryn Kerr and his brother-in-law, Ted Lutz.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016 at Carlisle First Church of God, 705 Glendale Street, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Gregory Hench officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
