Larry J. Piper, Sr., age 71, of Carlisle, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at his residence.
He was born May 31, 1945 in Carlisle to the late George H. and Dorothy P. (Coover) Piper and was the widower of Kay W. (Barrick) Piper who passed April 14, 2016.
Larry retired from the United States Navy as a Petty Officer after 24 years of service including during the Vietnam War. He served aboard the U.S.S. Nantahala, the U.S.S. Belknap, the U.S.S. Daniels and the U.S.S. Sumpter. He was a graduate of Big Spring High School, class of 1963, and received an Associates degree from Excelsior College in Albany, NY. Larry was an outstanding cake designer and baked and decorated many wedding cakes. During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his loving wife, Kay to all his Navy ships reunion groups and visiting landmarks throughout the United States. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at his cabin at Raystown Lake. Most of all, Larry enjoyed his loving children and grandchildren. He was a life member of the Carlisle VFW Post #477, a member of the Raystown Striper Club and a member of the Mt. Holly Springs Church of God.
He is survived by: two sons, Larry J. Jr. (and wife Yolanda) Piper of Martinsburg, WV and Eric J. (and wife Terry) Piper of Carlisle; four brothers, Dale and Wayne, both of Shippensburg, Galen of Boiling Springs and Roger Piper of Carlisle; two sisters, Theresa Lesher of Newville and Isabelle Henry of New Cumberland; and five grandchildren, McKenna, Aislinn, Aidan, Orren and Aaron. In addition to his parents and wife, Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Shughart and an infant brother, George Piper, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Mt. Holly Springs Church of God, 602 McLand Road, Mt. Holly Springs, PA with Rev. Richard L. Reese officiating. Burial will follow at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle with full military honors provided by the Cumberland County Honor Guard. There will be a visitation at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
