Lamar L. “Peck” Freeland, 87, of Carlisle died at his residence on Friday, January 19, 2024. He was born in Newport, PA on August 30, 1936 to his parents, the late Belmont and Margaret (Stephens) Freeland. Lamar was the husband of Jill (Baylor) Freeland of Sunbury, PA. Peck and Jill celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary August 23, 2023.
He was a graduate of Newport High School, class of 1955 and Bloomsburg University (formerly State Teachers College), class of 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education. He loved teaching Consumer Economics at Carlisle High School, where he retired in 1990 after 31 years of teaching. He coached high school football at Carlisle for over 25 years. He also served as the scorekeeper and statistician for the high school wrestling team during this period. In 1960, he was a co-founder of the Carlisle Sports Association and directed the Carlisle Teener League Baseball organization. After retiring from teaching and coaching, he served as the Assistant Equipment Manager at Dickinson College for many years. He loved Penn State football and wrestling, church camping trips, traveling, and photography.
Peck loved serving others. He was very involved in the greater Carlisle community. He held memberships in CAEA, PSEA, CCCPASR, and AARP. He was a member of the Newport Masonic Lodge #381 and an active member of the First United Church of Christ, Carlisle. Perhaps his greatest impact after retirement was made through his work with the Plainfield Lions Club. He was currently serving as Zone 2-A PZC. He was the brainchild, founder, and president of zone-wide Western Cumberland County (WCC) Lions project to raise money for those in need throughout the community.
In addition to his loving wife, Peck is survived by his son: Scott Freeland, Esq., his wife, Carmen, of Ohio; his daughters: Susan Freeland Allen, her husband, Michael and Dr. Sharon Freeland Harris, her husband, Brian, all of Virginia; his grandchildren: Paige, Brock, Elise, Emma, Natalie, Bowen and Darian; his three great grandchildren: Kacie, Kane and Kenzie, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and other loving family members.
Family and friends are invited to his viewing Friday, February 2, 2024 from 5 to 7 pm at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, Ltd., 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:45 pm and to his funeral service 10 am Saturday, February 3, 2024 at First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
Interment will be held at 12:30 pm at Mt. Zion at Churchtown Cemetery, Boiling Springs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Peck’s name may be made to Plainfield Lions Club or First United Church of Christ at the address above.
