Kathleen W. "Katie" Barber, age 90, of Carlisle, died Monday, November 30, 2015 at Chapel Pointe at Carlisle with her loving family at her side.
She was born on October 24, 1925 in Glenolden, PA to the late Homer and Margaret Greene White and was the widow of Lewis C. Barber who died May 11, 1959.
Katie graduated from the Syracuse University, Class of 1947, with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. She was a Professor of Physical Education at Dickinson College where she coached women's field hockey, tennis, and at one point, women's basketball. While at Dickinson College, she was the Coordinator of Women's Athletics from 1974 until her retirement in 1988. She was a former PIAA referee of field hockey and women's basketball. Katie was inducted into the Central PA Sports Hall of Fame and the Dickinson College Sports Hall of Fame. She was member of the Women's AAU. Katie was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Carlisle Historical Society.
She is survived by two sons, L. Curtis (and wife Sandra) Barber, Jr. of Harrisburg and Craig (and wife Rosemarie) Barber of Buffalo, NY; a daughter, Gretchen B. (and husband Mark) Naugle of Carlisle; seven grandchildren, Cory ( and wife Cynthia) Barber of Shermans Dale, Bethany (and husband David) Afshar of Marietta, GA, Amanda (and husband Andrew) Rife of Carlisle, Kendra (and husband Shannon Shertzer) Gilliam of Mt. Holly Springs, Brennan (and wife Liane) Barber of Raleigh, NC, Mitchell (and wife Jackie) Naugle of Carlisle and Brett (and wife Allison) Barber of Buffalo, NY; eleven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Brittany, Jackson, Kylie, Mya, Caleb, Katie, Riley, Madison, Max and Miranda; sister-in-law, Joan Williams; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Homer O. White and a sister, Joan Harrison.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 4, 2015 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey L. Gibelius and Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna officiating. Private interment will be at Mt. Holly Springs Cemetery. There will be a visitation with family and repast following the service in the church rotunda.
