Juan Luis García-Tuñón

Juan Luis García-Tuñón, age 69, of Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Geisinger Holy Spirit.

He was born July 26, 1949 in Havana, Cuba to the late Alberto and Cristina (Gelats) García-Tuñón. He came to this country at age eleven in July 1960 on a family vacation shortly after Fidel Castro took power. He grew up in the Washington, DC area until going to business school at St. Louis University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He served as President of his fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, and later earned his MBA from Washington University, also in St. Louis.

Juan was an accomplished international business executive. He started his business career at Kodak, where he met his wife Sue, who was a fellow employee. He always considered this the high point of his years at Kodak. He continued his career at Burlington Industries in Cuernavaca and Mexico City, Mexico as President of their Mexican operations. He and his family moved to Carlisle in 1990, when he joined Masland Industries, which was later sold to Lear Corporation.

Juan was an active participant in the Rotary Club of Carlisle, where he served as President for two separate terms, Director for 4 years and Assistant Governor for 4 years. In 2014 he was named Rotarian of the Year for their entire district. He was very involved in their Youth Exchange Program where he made many life-long friends from around the world and was a beloved mentor. He also volunteered extensively with the United Way. He loved to sail, play golf with his sons, and enjoyed photography. Juan was always the appointed photographer at family and Rotary events.

Juan is survived by his two sons, J.P. and wife Meredith and their children Sean and Colin of Mechanicsburg, Nick and wife Emily of Boston; Susan García-Tuñón, his wife of 38 years; siblings Cristina Richards and husband Walsh, Alvaro García-Tuñón and wife Sandy, and Cecilia Lear and husband Steven; sisters-in-law Elena García-Tuñón and Gisela García-Tuñón; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Alberto, Carlos, and Miguel García-Tuñón.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013 with Rev. Martin O. Moran, III as celebrant.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Hoffman Funeral Home, 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Club of Carlisle Foundation, P.O. Box 301, Carlisle, PA 17013-0301 or the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, 500 SW 127th Ave, Miami, FL 33184.
