John Myers

John Francis Myers, a long-time resident of Carlisle, passed away in his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, November 21^st at the age of 57.  He is survived by his brother Anthony Myers of Rock Hill, SC, James Myers of Tampa, FL, Patrick and Katherine Myers of Biloxi, MS, David Myers of Carlisle, PA, Stephen and Brenda Myers of Palm Harbor, FL and Thomas and Adrienne Myers of Gulf Shores, AL.  John was the seventh son of James R. and Margaret Myers of Carlisle.  He was predeceased by his parents, James and Margaret Myers and his older brother, Vincent Myers. 

John was young at heart and loved to make those around him smile and laugh.  John was always a happy person, laughed easily and lit up the room with his presence.  One particular memory of the family’s was his singing many stirring renditions of the song, “Delta Dawn”, especially with his cousins when he was a young boy.  John was a kind-hearted person, and he was well-loved throughout the communities of Carlisle and Pittsburgh.  John was an avid cat-lover and rescued many cats throughout his life. He attended Northside Community Church in Pittsburgh for many years.  He served as an advocate for fair housing and medical care access, and to help try to remove the social stigma to the many who suffer from mental and emotional issues.  This was his mission while serving on the Community Advisory Board and the Open Door since 2010 in Pittsburgh.  His infectious enthusiasm in helping others is how he should be remembered.  John also served in the U.S. Army for four years, and held assignments at Fort Gordon and Fort Benning, Georgia.

John loved his family and absolutely loved being an uncle. He adored his nieces and nephews and recently made a trip down to Alabama to see his niece graduate from college.  He had planned to attend another niece’s graduation ceremony from high school next spring.  Although he didn’t have any children of his own, John loved his nieces and nephews like they were his own.  

A burial service will be held at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens at noon  in Carlisle on Thursday, December 14^th, 2023.
