John M. Remaly, 91, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2017, at Chapel Pointe of Carlisle. He was born on July 30, 1925, in Baltimore MD, to the late Rev. Francis E. and Mary Beiber Remaly.
He was a graduate of Carlisle High School, class of 1943; received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the former Shippensburg State Teacher's College in 1949; and his Masters of Education Degree from Penn State University in 1954. He taught social studies for a brief time at Boiling Springs High School and was an educator and administrator in the Carlisle School District for 35 years. He served as Principal at Wilson, LeTort, Stevens and Hamilton Elementary Schools.
Upon graduating from high school, John enlisted in the Army Air Force and flew as a waist gunner in a B24 Liberator in the 10th Air Force in the China, Burma, India Theater during WWII. He survived serious burns over much of his body when his plane crashed shortly after take-off, fully loaded with a cargo of gasoline.
John loved music. He sang in several musical groups, including the Carlisle High School Choir; the former Allison UMC and Grace Baptist Church choirs; in Cantate Carlisle; and was a singer and soloist for many years in the Carlisle Community choir's annual performance of Handels' Messiah. He was also a trombonist in the Carlisle High School Band and the Carlisle Town Band, where he was a member for 50 years.
In addition to singing in the Allison UMC Choir, he was a high school Sunday School teacher for many years.
He was a past president and 40 year member of the Carlisle Kiwanis Club.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family as well as traveling with his wife of 61 years, Helen Meals Remaly, who passed away in 2009. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dale Remaly.
He is survived by three daughters, Susan Stake and Nancy (Robert) Weaver of Carlisle and Sally Hale of Sequim, WA; by five grand-children, Amy Morgan of Hershey, R. David Bollinger, III (Heather) of Boiling Springs, Sara (Billy) Hurliss of Seattle, Marta (Daniel) Wolford of Lebanon and Rachel Speck of Pembroke Pines, FL; and by five great-grand children, Justin and Joshua Morgan, Andrew and Jason Bollinger and Abigail Wolford.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 11:00 AM at Grace Baptist Church, 777 West North St., Carlisle, PA, 17013 with Elder Tom Richwine officiating. A time of visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Grace Baptist Church; the Carlisle Town Band, 35 East South St., Carlisle, PA, 17013; or to the Carlisle Kiwanis Club, PO Box 862, Carlisle, PA, 17013.
