John J. “Joe” Bishop, Sr., 74, of Carlisle, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025, at UPMC Harrisburg

A devoted first responder and lifelong resident of Carlisle, Joe was the son of the late Matthew and E. Blanche (Farner) Bishop. He cherished 50 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Rose (Jones) Bishop.

Joe’s dedication to public service spanned more than five decades as a volunteer firefighter with several local fire companies, including Cumberland Goodwill, Union, and Carlisle Fire and Rescue. Whether battling flames, mentoring new firefighters, or offering a helping hand, he found immense purpose in serving his community. Even after retiring from active duty, he remained involved through his work with Carlisle Special Police, staying connected to the profession he loved.

Beyond his work in fire service, Joe enjoyed delivering flowers for Stephenson’s Flowers and traveling throughout the tri-state area delivering firetrucks and equipment for Fire Rescue Products. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—solving puzzles, playing games on his phone, spending time with his beloved dogs, and cheering on his Kansas City Chiefs. Known for his sharp wit and contagious sense of humor, Joe was a gifted storyteller who could always bring a smile to those around him.

Above all, Joe cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rose, and their children: Dawne Curlen (Mark), Kelly Jones, Tanya Bishop, Joey Bishop, and Allison Bishop, all of Carlisle. He was a proud grandfather to eight—Ashley, Bryce, Lance, Shania, Savannah, Paige, and Madi—and a loving great-grandfather to six. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Bishop of Boiling Springs.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenny Bishop, and his grandson, Keefer Bernhisel.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe’s life at his viewing on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The Meeting House, 1155 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle. A service will follow immediately after the viewing at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joe’s honor may be made to Cumberland Goodwill EMS, 519 South Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA 17013, or Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services, 177 Carlisle Springs Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
