It is with great Sadness that the family of John E. Riley of Carlisle announce his passing unexpectedly after a brief illness, on Saturday, December 14, 2019
John was born on November 27, 1942 to the loving parents of the late John and Josephine (Bohosky) Riley in Shenandoah, PA.
John enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served for over 6 years. While serving his country he earned a “Bronze Medal” for good conduct, an “Expert Rifle M14” medal for esteemed marksmanship, and a “National Defense Service” medal.
As a Civilian, John worked for ABF Freight Systems where he retired after 22 years of service. He also worked for Preston and Roadway Trucking as well. He excelled in his profession and displayed an impeccable work ethic. He was well respected among his colleagues and considered a leader, mentor and friend.
John enjoyed spending time outdoors. He took pride in landscaping his home and found joy in watching summer sunsets from his outdoor gazebo. John had a connection with animals domestic, wild and exotic alike. He adored his dog who was his guardian and friend. He taught his pet Amazon Parrot “Sammy” to talk and even rescued and domesticated a baby racoon he named, “Rocky”. John enjoyed taking drives in his 1967 Corvette Stingray and has enjoyed dining out at “Momma Spriggs” with his wife every Friday night for over 7 years where he made many good friends.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Kathleen; his loving children, sons, Robert J. Riley (wife Tisa) of Dauphin, John J. Riley of Halifax and John D. Thrush (wife Jessica) of Mechanicsburg; daughters, Denise Shoop (husband Mark) of Millerstown and Jessica Meyers (husband Nick) of Mechanicsburg; and his adoring grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the start of the service. Interment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, following the service.
