John E. Durham

John E. Durham, age 91, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the Claremont Nursing & Rehab Center.
He was born August 11, 1926 in Carlisle to the late Linus C. and Grace (Mumper) Durham and was the widower of Phyllis R. (Heberlig) Durham who passed March 12, 2014.
John was a United States Navy World War II combat veteran and started his career after the Navy as a barber. He retired from the criminal justice system as a Corrections Office at the Camp Hill State Correctional Institution as a Lieutenant, where he was also a Firearms Instructor. John enjoyed hunting, training his dogs for hunting and horseback riding. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, and St. John’s Lodge #260 F&AM.
He is survived by: three sons, Deemer E. (wife Mary Kay) Durham of Carlisle, Mitch (wife Melanie) Durham of Mechanicsburg; and Brent B. (wife Mary Anne) Durham of Newville; a granddaughter, Kathryn; five grandsons, Greg (partner Bob), Jeff, Jonathan (wife Tane), Joshua (wife Katrina), and Tyler; three great-grandchildren, Henry, Gabe and Callie; and two step-grandchildren, Joseph and Lucy. In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Durham.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle with Rev. Daniel Dennis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Inc. 20 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
